McNamee's Appleton

Appleton WI Illustrated, 1892

Contributing Institution: Appleton Public Library

Published under the auspices of the Advancement Association of Appleton, 1892.

This volume is primarily a collection of original photographs by the commercial photographer J. E. H. Stimson, of Appleton. It includes all of the major structures of the time; schools, both municipal and Lawrence University, churches, manufacturing facilities and businesses. Also represented are a large number of private homes belonging to prominent residents, and photos of the leaders of the city, and local political scene. Finally, as you would expect from the Advancement Association of Appleton, there is a snapshot of the area extolling the virtues of its physical location and attributes, vigorous manufacturing productivity, modern progressive views and excellent educational opportunities. This provides a wealth of information about exactly what it was like to be living, or making a living, in Appleton at the time.

Pioneers

The Pioneers of Outagamie County

Contributing Institution: Appleton Public Library

This volume was intended to record the early history of the pioneer settlers of Outagamie County . It was felt that the stories and exploits of the earliest generations were already in danger of being lost. It was at the request of the Association that this task was undertaken. The compiler, Elihu Spencer, served as the secretary of the Outagamie County Pioneer Association for over twenty years. Biographical information was supplied by each of the families and was felt to be as accurate as possible. Although not every pioneer family is represented, the majority appear somewhere. Of special interest to genealogists is the focus on listing as much of the family as is known. Parents, children, grandchildren, multiple marriages , and military service are widely reported. A second edition of similar form was compiled in 1898 and can be found at http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/WI/subcollections/AppletonPlatsAbout.html along with some other historical resources.
