Description	Republican. Opponent James Ryan. Paper mill executive. Appleton Telephone Company was organized during his term with 23 patrons. Milwaukee and northern extension of the Lake Shore railroad reached Appleton. New businesses included Valley Pulp and Paper company and Kelly Bros. Woolen Mills. Miss Sophia Walker, a Lawrence student, was publisher of Wisconsin's first magazine, "Badger State Monthly". Theodore Conkey, a prominent citizen, died in 1879.
